Nintendo Wii to be on everybody's Living room ? :

The Nintendo Wii, the low-cost cheap cousin of the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 looks like the winner in the next round of 'next-gen' Gaming consoles. By being a cheap non media-centric console, it still has online capabilities and a decent Game line up. Although Nintendo has not stepped into the 'next-gen' optical drive war, involving Blu-ray and HD-DVD supported by PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 respectively. It still is one great console to play with motion-sensitive controller the 'Wiimote' and the 'nunchunk' add-on. And it will have the legendary Zelda franchise, Metroid Prime 3 : Corruption. More promising titles like Project H.A.M.M.E.R, Unlimited Adventure, etc

The PlayStation 3 core equivalent to the Xbox 360 premium ? :

The PlayStation 3 core system's price has been mostly criticized by many Gaming blogs. It actually is equivalent to the Xbox 360 premium's price. While the Xbox 360 premium is actually US $399. The add-on that brings the two cousins is the inclusion of the HD-DVD add-on drive, which turns out to be on almost every Xbox 360 owner's wishlist. After all both systems offer the Same specs, 20 GB hard-drive, no Wi-fi, no HDMI ouput, while the PlayStation 3 offers Bluetooth and an extra USB port and a Blu-ray drive ( considered to be more advanced than the HD-DVD) for the same price. Conclusion: No need of serious backlash among the Microsoft fan boys club. And a good night's sleep for the Core PlayStation 3 buyer. So the PlayStation 3 core ~ Xbox 360 premium + HD-DVD drive.

Is Xbox 360 a next-generation Gaming Console :

One of the greatest Questions that i've heard is that ' Is the Microsoft Xbox 360 really a "next-gen" gaming console? '. I was stunned when I heard that question, I was thinking about it and I landed on a struggling revealation. The Xbox 360, is a next-gen console but I would say due to its early launch last year, it may be considered as what Ken Kutagari said a Xbox 1.5, because it does not have anything new compared to the early generation. If wireless Gaming and a Good GPU is considered to be next-gen, then even I can make one by upgrading my computer. But the other two contendors, The Nintendo Wii and The Sony PlayStation 3 have something new, that is motion-sensing controllers and PlayStation 3 has a blu-ray drive which itself is a Next-Generation Optical device. The Nintendo Wii has that Casual Gaming element attached to it, while the PlayStation 3 is considered for serious Gaming. The Xbox 360 turns out to be a Online enabled PC, that just has a few exclusive titles and has a great fan following due to its promotions and buy outs, hyping and other cheap methods of attracting consumers, The Halo Game was orginally a PC Game that became a Xbox title. So my conclusion is that while the Xbox 360 provides eye-pleasing graphics and stuff it definitely is not next-generation stuff.

Xbox 360 Vs Playstation 3 : The Real Price Comparison

Microsoft Xbox 360:
Price US $ 399
The Microsoft Xbox 360, is said to be cheaper than the PlayStation 3, but further research on the subject reflects that infact the Xbox 360 is costlier than the PlayStation 3. Just compare the features and the overall prices including all the accessories.

The Console: US $399
Features: 20 GB Hard-Disk, 2.4 GHz Wireless controllers (upto 4), Power PC processor (Three cores at 3.2 GHz each), 3 USB ports, Wi-fi is optional with a add-on adapter (802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g) sold separately for US $100, External HD-DVD drive will retail for about US $200, Online Gaming Service 'Live' for $49 per year for actual playability. Micro downloads will be available for Game Content. HDMI add-on port for the Xbox 360 will be probably about US $50. Number of Xbox 360 titles = 160 titles. About 1000 Xbox titles to be backward compatible with the Xbox 360. Total Games Playable on the Xbox 360 = 1160 Games.

Total Price of the Xbox 360 Including all the Accessories = US $399 + US $200 + US $100 +
US $50 + US $ 49 = US $798.

Sony PlayStation 3: Price US $ 599

PlayStation 3 :

This is my first article on my Blog and I want it to be something that is one of the futuristic consoles, PlayStation 3. A great technological masterpiece. The Specs are not okay, they are GREAT. Get ready for the next-generation goodness. This beauty will be soon in over a million households.

Hardware Specifications :
This is where the PlayStation 3 outperforms the competition.

CPU :

It has a 3.2 GHz multi-core processor, which has 8 3.2 SPEs. The PPE has a 512 KB L2 cache and one VMX

Only seven SPEs are active; the eighth is redundant, to improve yield. If one of the eight has a manufacturing defect, it is disabled without rendering the entire unit defective.

Graphics processing unit (GPU) :

Custom RSX or "Reality Synthesizer" design co-developed by NVIDIA and Sony:

  • Clocked at 550 MHz
  • 1.8 TFLOPS
  • 136 shader operations per clock
  • 74.8 billion shader operations per second (100 billion with CPU)
  • Full high definition output (up to 1080p x 2 channels
  • Multi-way programmable parallel floating point shader pipelines
  • 128-bit pixel precision offers rendering of scenes with high dynamic range imaging
  • 512 MB Graphics Render Memory
  • Sony has hinted it may also handle audio (possibly Nvidia's Soundstorm 1) PS3 Block Diagram
  • 1.1 billion vertices per second.

  • IEEE 802.11 b, g Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • USB 2.0 (x6) (four front and two rear ports).

Networking :

SCEI's press release indicates that controller connectivity to the PlayStation 3 can be provided via:

  • 802.11b, g Wi-Fi. Integrated for mesh networking and connectivity with the PlayStation Portable
  • TCP/IP networking (wired ethernet)
  • USB 2.0 (wired)
  • Bluetooth 2.0 (up to 7 Bluetooth devices).

Controller :

On March 23, 2006 at the Game Developers Conference, Phil Harrison announced that the "boomerang" design has indeed been scrapped and a new controller was

Physical dimensions :

  • 32 cm (L) x 24 cm (W) x 8 cm (H)

Overall floating-point capability :

In a slide show at their E3 conference, Sony presented the "CPU floating point capability" of the PlayStation 3's Cell CPU, and compared it to other CPUs. In their official press release, the same statistic regarding the PS3 as a whole was reported to be 2 TFLOPS.
The figures are rounded estimates based on addition of the theoretical maximum floating point performances of the processing units in the Cell CPU and those of the RSX GPU. Inevitably, real-world performance for both systems will be lower. Additionally, programmers may find it difficult, initially, to optimize their game engines to make the best use of the highly parallel architectures of both systems, further reducing real-world performance.

Region coding :

During a Q&A session at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will indeed feature region-free gaming.

Blu-ray movies will still use a region code. However, the Blu-ray region code will be different from the DVD region code.

Isn't this sweet to hear, but these features are not yet cofirmed. But i'm looking forward for this beauty.
